A Scientific Study Has Proven That Kratom Is Just As Effective As Immodium For Inhibiting Diarrhea
A study from Prince of Songkla University in Thailand has scientifically confirmed what many Kratom users already know well, which is that Kratom is a highly effective anti-diarrheal. In-fact, this scientific study has proven that Kratom is just as effective for stopping diarrhea as Immodium (Loperamide), which is the most popular over the counter anti-diarrheal medicine. Fascinatingly, this scientific study also found that Kratom does not just have anti-diarrheal effects because it is an opioid, but also because Kratom interacts with additional pathways to produce anti-diarrheal effects, meaning Kratom is a unique new type of anti-diarrheal medicine.
The study is titled ‘Inhibitory effects of kratom leaf extract (Mitragyna speciosa Korth.) on the rat gastrointestinal tract‘, and in this experiment rats were given castor oil in order to induce diarrhea, and different groups of rats were given Kratom extract, Morphine, and Immodium.
It was found that Kratom decreased defecation frequency, fecal weight, and total diarrhea score, which is a simple scoring system for how bad the diarrhea is. Further, it was found that increasing doses of Kratom brought about increasing anti-diarrheal effects.
The most critical finding is that the anti-diarrheal effect of Immodium was found to be equivalent to the anti-diarrheal effect of Kratom. In other words, Kratom is just as strong as the standard anti-diarrheal medicine.
Diving into the science behind why Kratom has anti-diarrheal effects, first off it is well-known that opioids in general have anti-diarrheal effects. Indeed, Immodium (Loperamide) is actually a synthetic opioid, and it is the only over the counter synthetic opioid since it is generally non-abusable unless taken in absolutely insane doses, but that’s a story for another article.
More specifically, the scientists who conducted this study speculate that Kratom’s anti-diarrheal effects are due to decreased gastrointestinal motility and anti-permeability action.
One very interesting result was that Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, did not cancel out Kratom’s anti-diarrheal effects. If Kratom’s anti-diarrheal effects were only due to its opioid properties, then Naloxone should have canceled out Kratom’s anti-diarrheal effects. Indeed, Naloxone cancels out the anti-diarrheal effects of Morphine.
Therefore, the scientists concluded that Kratom exerts anti-diarrheal effects via other pathways, in addition to the regular anti-diarrheal effects caused by opioid agonism. This is particularly fascinating, since it means Kratom is in a class of its own when it comes to anti-diarrheal medicines.
On a final note, this is critically important information because in some cases diarrhea can damage health or even cause death, like with Cholera. This is because if someone has really frequent diarrhea due to some sort of disease or condition, they can get to the point where they are completely malnourished and dehydrated. Further, even in less severe cases, diarrhea can cause a patient to become very weak, causing the condition/disease to last longer.
Thus, Kratom has the ability to improve the health and well-being of patients who have severe diarrhea, and in-fact Kratom could actually save lives thanks to its anti-diarrheal properties, since sometimes diarrhea is a deadly condition.
