Scientific Study Finds That Kratom Reverses Physiological Damage Caused By Opioid Dependence, Including Reversing The Upregulation Of cAMP And Reversing The Downregulation Of Mu-Opioid Receptors
It is well known that Kratom is incredibly useful for quitting synthetic opioids and opiates, since Kratom can be taken to mitigate withdrawals, and then used long term to prevent cravings/re-lapses. However, a scientific study has found that Kratom’s utility for managing opioid dependence goes beyond simply being a safer alternative, Kratom actually reverses critical negative physiological changes caused by the chronic use of synthetic opioids and opiates.
The scientific study is titled ‘The effect of mitragynine on cAMP formation and mRNA expression of mu-opioid receptors mediated by chronic morphine treatment in SK-N-SH neuroblastoma cell‘, and it found that Mitragynine, Kratom’s primary alkaloid, reverses the upregulation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and reverses the downregulation of mu-opioid receptors.
Breaking this down, when someone chronically uses synthetic opioids and opiates, their mu-opioid receptors begin to downregulate, i.e. disappear. Basically, because the mu-opioid receptors are constantly being activated and over-stimulated by synthetic opioids and opiates, the body responds by reducing the number of mu-opioid receptors.
This has very negative consequences. The mu-opioid receptors are responsible for the body’s response to pain, and also important for regulating mood, so if the number of mu-opioid receptors declines sharply due to opioid addiction, then when that person quits the opioids they will end up having a lot more pain, stress, and depression.
Indeed, this effect is a primary reason why synthetic opioids and opiates are so addictive. As soon as the drugs are stopped, there is a lot of pain and depression due to the lack of mu-opioid receptors, and this gives a person a strong urge to continue the drugs. Further, it takes a long time for the mu-opioid receptors to upregulate after quitting, resulting in post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) where depression can last for many months, if not a year or two.
The good news is that Kratom apparently reverses the downregulation of mu-opioid receptors, i.e. causes the mu-opioid receptors to start growing back.
Literally, this makes Kratom an actual cure for opioid dependence, rather than just an alternative, since it fixes the negative physiological changes caused by opioid dependence.
Further, this scientific study also found that Kratom reduces the upregulation of cAMP, with cAMP playing a critical role in the body’s response to painful stimuli. Synthetic opioids and opiates lead to a super activation of cAMP, in an attempt for the body to restore equilibrium and properly feel pain, and this results in a surge of pain if the drugs are discontinued.
In-fact, it is theorized that the upregulation of cAMP is the cellular basis of opioid withdrawal, since basically if the drugs are discontinued then all the cells are screaming out in pain since there is too much cAMP, and too much of a response to pain.
Therefore, since Kratom reduces the upregulation of cAMP, it helps to cure one of the fundamental causes of opioid withdrawal by reducing the pain response of opioid withdrawal.
Thus, this scientific study has proven that Kratom is not simply an alternative or substitute for synthetic opioids and opiates, but rather Kratom actually cures opioid dependence by reversing some of the primary negative physiological changes causes by opioid dependence, including reversing the downregulation of mu-opioid receptors and reversing the upregulation of cAMP.
